Cancer Patient Needs Help With New Health Care Insurance & Marketplace
- Roxanne S.
- Monday, 16 June 2014
Dear President Obama,
Until the new healthcare reform I have not had health care insurance at all for quite a few years. I was very excited when we were able to once again get health insurance. It felt so good to finally know that if my husband or myself became ill that we would be able to get treatment.
On May 5, 2014 we got the bad news that I had Stage 4 Lung Cancer with metastasis to my liver. I am not, nor have I been a smoker, so this was a total shock. I was advised to quit my job of 28+ years and to prepare for a long bout of chemotherapy in the upcoming battle with cancer.
Since getting this devastating diagnosis we have found that there is something worse that cancer and that is getting treatment covered under the insurance plan that we have been paying for each month. We signed up with Florida Blue HMO in the first wave of insurance sign ups.
Each day is a fight to get the coverage that we were promised-the coverage we paid for. With my job loss we also lost half of our income which put us in a much lower insurance bracket. My husband has spent hours and hours on the phone and each time is given a case number and assurances that all is set to right. But this is never over as they never follow through to complete the paperwork correctly. As a result my insurance coverage is still unsettled.
In addition to speaking to the insurance marketplace and the insurance company we have filed formal complaints with the Florida insurance commission.
This is my last step before resorting to a media event against the insurance marketplace and insurance company in order to get my rightful coverage.
I am hopeful that by appealing to you that you can step in and help us to get what we were promised. Fighting cancer is a terrible thing for a family to deal with and having to fight the insurance company makes it nearly impossible to do. I appeal to your sense of right to help us to get this resolved.
