Abuse of care

Dear President,
I am in the healthcare industry and help patients that are ill... but there are patients that abuse the healthcare system. These patients are the ones that get free healthcare and don't care about the cost. It is frustrated to have other patients to care for and have a patient come to hospital over and over seeking for narcotics. Healthcare professionals know when a patient is abusing the medication but if the patient continues to say "I'm still in pain" then the physician has no choice but to continue ordering the narcotic and the patient continues to get high. We see it every day ...it's an abuse of narcotics. The first choice of drug is a narcotic what happened to Motrin. Where do we draw the line....there has to be a change because we are seeing more and more patients just walk thru the doors of hospitals and request what medication the doctor to give them...it is ridiculous no work up no reason why... Just because the patient says so. The fear physicians and nurses have to work under because of healthcare reform, insurance companies and patient law suites gives absolutely no room to speak up but to conform to the situation and allow patient to abuse system and get away with it.
Healthcare professionals work hard and are not compensated for what we do. We are treated disgracefully by most patients perhaps because I work in an inner city hospital but talking to other healthcare professionals I hear the same. All we want to do is help our patients... The verbal and physical abuse we indure needs to end. It's needs to be address and patients or family members that threaten or abuse a healthcare professional needs to be fined and prosecuted for their behavior...It is unexceptable. President the list goes on and on... So many changes need to be made within the healthcare system and I wish someone would address that. Thank you for electronic charting makes a difference and information so accessible. I also, want to mention that how there is no regulation on the limit of healthcare to inmates. It is insane the test after test that is approved and done. Meanwhile, civil citizens have to get referrals, have to make co-payments etc. to have certain test or consults done. It is mind boggling...the amount of money invested is sad especially to know that we pay for it. I know that I have mentioned a lot in this message but if something is addressed and changed its a start to better our healthcare system. Thank you. Ms. Leonar
